Manufacturing Scrap Rate
It measures how much of what you make ends up in the scrap bin instead of shipping to customers.
Formal definition
Scrap rate equals scrapped parts or material weight divided by total parts or weight produced, expressed as a percentage.
Why it matters
Every scrapped part paid for material, labor, and machine time twice — rates above 2% often wipe out job margin.

Worked example
- Total parts produced: 10,000.
- Scrap parts: 150.
- Scrap rate = (150 ÷ 10,000) × 100 = 1.5%.
- Interpretation: 1.5% of production was lost to scrap — within many shops' tolerance.

Scrapped units ÷ Units produced × 100.
The range we use for status labels
On Business metrics, the status band for this KPI is roughly 0 to 2. Lower values are generally healthier in this band. Your niche can sit outside it honestly — the label is a prompt to read the coaching, not a certificate.
Where people fool themselves
Scrap that gets “reworked into seconds” and then sold still consumed capacity. If you only count landfill, the rate is a PR number.
