Cost Per Mile (CPM)

It is what it costs you to move the truck one mile — fuel, maintenance, driver pay, and more.

Formal definition

Cost per mile equals total operating costs divided by total miles driven in the period.

Why it matters

Carriers quote in revenue per mile; profit lives in the gap between RPM and CPM.

Where you see it

  • Owner-operator settlement sheets
  • Fleet management telematics
  • Load board economics training
  • DOT safety and maintenance meetings
  • Transportation MBA case studies

Worked example

  1. Operating costs: $220,000.
  2. Miles driven: 100,000.
  3. CPM = $220,000 ÷ 100,000 = $2.20/mile.
  4. Interpretation: Each mile costs $2.20 to operate before fixed overhead.

How Business metrics calculates it

Operating costs (fuel, labor, opex as entered) ÷ Miles.

The range we use for status labels

On Business metrics, the status band for this KPI is roughly 1.65 to 2.5. Lower values are generally healthier in this band. Your niche can sit outside it honestly — the label is a prompt to read the coaching, not a certificate.

Where people fool themselves

Cost per mile without insurance because “it’s annual” understates the mile. Allocate annual fixed costs or you will bid like a company that never has a wreck.
