Average Service Value

It is the average ticket per visit — what each client appointment is worth to the practice.

Formal definition

Average service value equals total service revenue divided by the number of appointments or services completed.

Why it matters

Low ticket size with high chair cost is a common salon and clinic failure pattern; upsells and tiered menus fix it.

Where you see it

  • Salon POS reports
  • Dental practice dashboards
  • Med-spa KPI reviews
  • Franchise disclosure documents
  • Service business coaching

Worked example

  1. Service revenue: $85,000.
  2. Appointments served: 1,000.
  3. Average service value = $85,000 ÷ 1,000 = $85.
  4. Interpretation: Each visit averages $85 in revenue.

How Business metrics calculates it

Revenue ÷ Services or visits as entered.

Where people fool themselves

Average service value that includes retail product tickets will look like you should raise haircut prices. Split retail and service if the mix is large.
